Review - The Bishops Bride

The Bishops Bride by Elizabeth W. Watkins was one of the latest books I read. Andrew McCammon has been a widower for about 3 years and learns he is about to be called as Bishop (leader of a local LDS congregation). Furthermore, he needs top be married and has three weeks to be engaged or serious about someone.

Well, things fall into place, as you knew they would. The book is somewhat predictable in the outcome, but the events along the way are somewhat unpredictable. Remember the Love Boat? Well, all things seemed bleakest at the half-way point and this book copies this formula. I wouldn't call this book boring, because it wasn't. I liked it but the tension between Andrew and Jeanette is a little, well, imaginative. And I really disliked to cover. It depicts characters in their 30's while the book clearly puts their ages in their late 40's. I would have rather seen a blank cover or some abstract art than this deceptive picture. Shame on Covenant Communications!

I'd recommend the book for a light read for those wanting to read a light romance even though it is contrived and a unrealistic.

So another book down and now it's on to Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. This should be interesting...

The Flickertail State

We enjoyed an early fall break, visiting family in The Flickertail State, or North Dakota.

We visited the Heritage Center and saw some of the history of North Dakota, native populations and rich farm history.

Here is one of the "antiques" used by other "antiques" in his boyhood.

The nieces and nephew met us one morning for breakfast, following an afternoon and evening at a swim party.

Food was definitely something we enjoyed. Apparently, some enjoyed it more than others.

Of course, our visit would not be complete without a visit to Turtle Lake, home to Harley. We also enjoyed a tour of the Tornado, a cool new device that allows files to be transfered from one computer to another through USB ports.

Review - Justice Denied

Another book finally finished. The latest one was Justice Denied by J. A. Jance. Jance writes two series in addition to other suspense mysteries. This title featured J. P. Beaumont, a gruff yet lovable investigator with the Washington State Attorney Generals Office.

In this novel Beaumont and his partner Mel Soames are tasked to investigate a bunchy of old, cold cases. While Beau looks into missing persons cases, Mel is investigating old sex assault cases. The two of them finally come together, but not nearly soon enough. Along the way, they are aided by a forensic economist who helps them uncover trends of their cases.

This book was not quite the same as her previous books. As Publishers Weekly put it, this was just not up to the caliber of Jance. Nevertheless, it was enjoyable.

Now it's on to The Bishop's Bride by Elizabeth W. Watkins.

Fall Colors

Lexie and I went for a short walk today and took some pictures showing the nice fall colors that come to Utah. The white on the mountains has occurred due to the last couple of weekends (so much for putting the shed together).

Then we took some other pictures along the river, which we live close to.

And here are a couple of pictures of Lexie on one of her favorite walks, along the river trail.
