Projects

We finished the shed! With my brothers help (why not invite him for Thanksgiving?) we were able to level the shed and complete it. The next couple of days I was able to put the finishing touches on it and move some of our summer equipment in. Nice to have it done!

And DeeAnn finished a very cute sweater. The recipient, Jaycee, models it for us.

And, just for the fun of it, this next picture is a close up of the small snow pellets that came down in the middle of a lightning and thunderstorm Thursday evening.

Review - Mr. Monk Goes to Hawaii

Mr. Monk Goes to Hawaii by Lee Goldberg was the last book I read. This is the second Monk book I have read and, again, I enjoyed it.

The premise is that Natalie, Monk's assistant, is invited to Hawaii to participate in a girlfriends wedding. But Monk has to tag along and quickly involves them in the investigation. Not only that, but Dylan Swift, the famous psychic is a near-permanent guest at their hotel and claims to have a message from the beyond for them both. Monk doubts his credibility and goes about proving it and solving the murder.

I particularly enjoyed the segment describing Monk on the plane, drugged up enough to travel. Once on the island he is back to his usual self, instructing the maids on the proper way of folding towels, and day-long seminars on vacuuming techniques. And the opening crime involving a woman on the operating table responsible for killing the operating doctor is hilarious!

I recommend it for a teen or older reader, especially those that appreciate a funny, quirky novel. There is not too much offensive in it other than an occasional bad word here and there.

My next book is The Chase by Clive Cussler. And guess what? Then it's on to Mr. Monk and the Blue Flu!

Review - Twilight

One of the most popular books in the library this past year has been Twilight, by Stephanie Myers. Not only has it been popular, but the sequels, New Moon and Eclipse have been incredibly popular, and hard to keep enough copies in to satisfy the demand. What concerned me was there were several patrons indicating they wouldn't read the book and certainly wouldn't leat their teen daughters read it either. So I wanted to know 1) why was the book so popular, and 2) was was so offensive about the book.

What I discovered was a very nice romance, written about a teen girl recently relocated to Forks, a community in Washington State. She meets Edward Cullen, with "porcelain skin, golden eyes, a mesmerizing voice, and supernatural gifts...both irresistible and impenetrable." Bella finally discovers he is a vampire. But that does not deter her relationship until it endangers them both.

It really is a nice story. There is little to be offended by in this title, but I can't say that for the other volumes in the series. I would definitely recommend it for a teen girl that wants to read something a little different and enjoys a nice love story. The book stands on it's own and does not need a sequel though it's nice to find out what happens to them. I have had a number of people that have indicated they were not able to put it down, even staying up all night to read it.

Oh, and now a movie is in the works and her fourth book in the series, Breaking Dawn, is set to be released in the fall of 2008. But I thought I saw a sign in Borders that indicated it was coming out in May.

Disneyworld 2007 - Magic Kingdom, Our Last Day

Our final day in Florida started off in the Magic Kingdom, Florida's equivalent to Disneyland. There are a number of differences, including some minor differences in layout. There are several rides present in California that are not in the Florida park and some in Florida not present in California. But each parks personality is unique and special, in it's own way.

We had reservations at Boma, one of the restaurants at the hotel. Very good. There was a variety of unique dishes, especially fruit. It was interesting to try some African dishes for breakfast.

We revisted some of our favorite rides, such as Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin, Laugh Floor Comedy Club, The Hall of Presidents, and Jungle Cruise.

We had lunch reservations at Tony's Town Square Restaurant, an Italian restaurant at the front of the park. The theme was right out of the movie Lady and the Tramp. the food was excellent. It's definately a restaurnat we will visit again.

Then we took off, went back to the hotel to gather up our luggage and headed out to the airport. We had a brief layover in Denver and finally got home even though we were not sure we would make our connection.

It was a great stay in Florida. Not having a car didn't bother us in the least. The shuttle service was very efficient (for the most part) and much better than stuffing a car into a convertible. The weather was near perfect the whole time we were there. There were a few minor problems (lot of people on Saturday -- gee imagine that, and the problems on the NASA tour) but they didn't ruin our trip. We are looking forward to returning, perhaps with some guests.

Another adventure down and time to plan our next adventure. It's time to start saving money for our Disney Cruise but in the mean time we are looking forward to our trip to Philadelphia.

Disneyworld 2007 - Animal Kingdom and Epcot (again)

After bidding Dorie and Jimmy goodbye the night before, we ventured to two parks - Animal Kingdom and Epcot. We thought we would just see how much time we wanted to spend at AK and then catch a bus over to Epcot.

Of course, one of our favorite all-time rides is the Kilimanjaro Safaris. It is always amazing to see the animals that close up in an environment more natural than Hogle Zoo.

It was fun when we came around one corner and the giraffes were almost within reach. They are definitely beautiful animals. Oh, and tall too!

After the safari ride, we wandered around the park, stopping here and there, at whatever sounded fun. "It's Tough to be a Bug" is located inside the giant Tree of Life. As you walk down the path, you notice how hundreds of animals have been "carved" into the tree. It's pretty incredible how they have incorporated everything.

For the first time, we saw the show "Finding Nemo - The Musical". Very impressive. Some of the special effects they were able to do on stage were fun. The story is pretty much the same as the movie. But we still like the Aladdin show at Disneyland better.

And we saw a bird show featuring a number of birds, including the bald eagle shown below.

We found a little spot to eat and even though the wheelchair seating area was taken by others not in wheelchairs, we enjoyed a little more secluded area to enjoy our barbecued sandwiches. Not too bad.

So then it was off to the bus stop to catch a shuttle over to Epcot. This time, unlike Saturday, the park was pleasantly uncrowded and we found the lines at the different food booths short. We did enjoy a few more rides such as The Living Land, The Sears with Nemo and Friends, and The American Adventure.

Tuckered out, we grabbed some food in Epcot and headed back to the hotel, exhausted.
