Review - The Sea of Monsters

The last book I finished was The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan. This book is the second volume of the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series. The first title, the Lightning Thief, was very interesting and I have to say this was as well.

Percy and his friends find themselves on another quest, though this time he is not going on it with the permission of the school administration. Instead, he will probably be expelled. That is if he doesn't get killed first. Percy has been having dreams about his friend, Grover, who is in trouble. Apparently, Grover was on his own quest and was captured by a male cyclops who thinks Grover is a female and is preparing to marry him/her. Meanwhile Percy and his friends run into a former classmate who wants to kill them.

The book has some interesting twists and turns to the plot, as well as some very interesting characters. Like book one of the series, this book introduces the reader to more Greek mythology and the legends that accompany the various figures of the myths. It is 279 pages long and takes a little time to read since it has lots of detail and not as much dialog as other books. This book would be appropriate for an advanced elementary school student or middle school reader or older.

Now it's on to book three of the series, The Titans Curse.
