We spent the morning playing "tourist." First eating breakfast at this out-of-the-way cafe about 3 blocks from our hotel.

After breakfast we were lucky enough to get on an early boat to Alcatraz.

After Alcatraz, we walked around the Pier for awhile.
A live statue dude. |
We saw a harbor full of older ships. |
We had about a five block walk from the Best Western Tuscan Inn to
the pier. It was level, no obstructions and a pretty
easy walk. But DeeAnn had to wheel herself as I was busy with 2 large,
heavy suitcases. We left at about 2:35 as we had a boarding time of
3:00.
The line to board was pretty long when
we got there, even though we were a few minutes early. But it went
pretty quickly. Once inside the building (which was not very fancy at
all, but a new terminal is being opened next month) we were directed to
the "special needs" area. The first agent didn't really know how to run
a computer, so we were redirected to another. He was quick and
efficient and about 5 minutes later we were on the ship.
Our room was B302, on the Baja deck. It is a nice room, with a balcony.
The room is similar to what we have had in the past. The bathroom and
balcony are both ramped. New padding on the balcony. We used all 32
hangers in the closet, plus 3 that I b
rought with my suit.

Dinner was nice. Our table mates are Dan and Suzanne and Lois and Andy. We
both had fruit drenched in wine (not very good). DeeAnn then had a
shrimp cocktail while I had a salad. For the entree DeeAnn had prime
rib and I had pasta that included broccoli and olives (again, not very
good, but the prime rib was).
We returned back
to the room. The ship was very late leaving San Francisco. I was
asleep before we even left but apparently we didn't even leave until
about 11:00. Very full and bright moon that came up over Oakland. The
only problem we saw in the room was a broken door stop and a missing
light bulb in the lamp by my bed.
It was a little rocky that night, but not as bad it has been on other trips.
From the ships log: Once all stores and bunkers were taken on board in the late evening, we let go our moorings lines at 2321, thrusted off the berth, and put our engines astern to move clear of the dock. Grand Princess subsequently steamed south of Alcatraz Island, shortly before passing under the Golden Gate Bridge. We then proceeded through the outer buoyed channel, and once clear of the port confines of San Francisco, disembarked the local pilot at 0151. Grand Princess completed her departure by setting southerly courses along the coast of California, bound for the Mexican state of Baja, California, ringing 'full ahead' on her engines at 0154.
